Sunday of the Fathers of the 7th Ecumenical Council - October 11th

English: Seventh ecumenical council, Icon, 17th century, Novodevichy Convent, Moscow

The Seventh Ecumenical Council (also known as the Second Council of Nicaea) met in 787 AD in Nicaea (present-day İznik in Turkey) to restore the veneration of icons which had been suppressed by the iconoclast Emperors Leo III (717 - 741) and his son, Constantine V (741 - 775).

This was the 20th Sunday After Pentecost and 4th Gospel of Luke. On this day we commemorate the Holy Fathers of the 7th Ecumenical Council, in 787 AD. The Scripture passages are Galatians 1:11-19 & Hebrews 13:7 16 for the Epistle readings, and Luke 8:5-15 & John 17:1-13 for the Gospels.

You are listening to the Choir of St. Romanos the Melodist [Roman Sladkopevec] of the Byzantine Catholic Seminary in Presov sing  Troparion and kontakion of ss. Kyrillos and Methodios, our Slav apostles. Tone 4 (troparion) and tone 3 (kontakion), Carpathian chant - Prostopinie (Cantus firmus). Arrangement for mixed choir by Martin Skoviera.   For more chants go to  http://www.grkat.nfo.sk/eng/music.html#Chrysostomos
