The Byzantine Catholic faith community at the Church of the Resurrection has inherited a rich, centuries-old, international tradition of liturgy, theology, chant and history.  Whether you were raised in that tradition or have discovered it and claimed it for yourself later on, there's a lot to learn and there seem to be a lot of strange words connected with the way we live and pray.

The Greek Catholic Dictionary published by Fathers Basil Shereghy and Vladimir Vancik in 1951, marked the first serious attempt to explain basic Byzantine Catholic terms in English.  The authors, both distinguished faculty members at the Byzantine Catholic Seminary in Pittsburgh, were born and educated in Europe between the two world wars; Shereghy in Zakarpatska Rus and Vancik in Croatia.  Both earned doctorates in theology and both had distinguished educational and pastoral careers in the service of our Church.

There is a wealth of knowledge packed into this little dictionary. I am delighted that the Church of the Resurrection can offer this long out of print resource to the world via our website.  I hope that our parishioners and our friends will find it useful.  A prayer for the repose of the souls of Fathers Shereghy and Vancik, and a prayer for our parish family would be a wonderful way to say thanks for this resource.

Fr. John Slivka, a priest of the Eparchy of Passaic and long-time pastor of St Elias, Brooklyn, compiled a history of the Byzantine Ruthenian Catholic Church including translations of many documents originally composed in Latin, Hungarian and Rusyn.  The English is a bit rough and the book is not without its biases but it remains an important archive of our history as a Church. Download it here for free:
