Beheading of St. John the Baptist

AUGUST 29th

The death of St John is recorded in dramatic detail by St Mark’s Gospel (Mark 5,14-29).   St John began his career preaching repentance (Mark 1,4) and so it is traditional (though not obligatory) to observe a fast on the day of his martyrdom.   Recalling that John’s severed head was brought to Herod on a silver platter, Byzantine Catholics abstain from foods shaped like heads (lettuce, cabbage, apples) and eat from bowls rather than from plates.  St John’s martyrdom by the adulterous King Herod is an eloquent example of bravely “speaking truth to power.”    Through his prayers, may we also be brave for the truth, even when it is unfashionable.
